Features to know about

Smooth Hookups and Releases: Built to Handle Uneven Ground

Uneven gravel lots, sloped driveways, or campground dips can make disconnecting a pain. The etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar takes that frustration out of the equation. Its self-supporting, telescoping arms hold their weight so you can connect one side at a time without wrestling a heavy bar. When it’s time to unhook, non-binding trigger latches release pressure with a squeeze, letting you disconnect cleanly even when things aren’t perfectly aligned. The handles sit comfortably on the side of each arm, easy to reach and simple to use.

Room to Move: Extra-Long Arms for Tighter Turns

Tight turns at gas stations or weaving through campground loops don’t have to feel nerve-racking. The XHD’s longer arm design—extending from 39-1/4" to 51-3/4"—gives you more space and a wider turning radius for smooth maneuvering. You’ll have the clearance you need to move confidently without worrying about clipping corners or dragging hardware.

Keeps Things Level: Built-In Rise/Drop with Adjustable Head

Getting your tow bar level can be tricky when the RV’s hitch sits higher than the vehicle you’re towing. The XHD solves that with a built-in 1-1/2" rise/drop and a head that tilts 3" up or down. That adjustment keeps the setup within the recommended 3" difference, helping your connection stay level and reducing stress on both vehicles. Fewer add-on parts mean a simpler, cleaner setup right from the start.

Cables and Storage Already Sorted: Integrated Safety Cables

There’s no need to dig through bins of loose cables. The XHD’s straight, vinyl-coated safety cables are built right into the tow bar, rated at 14,000 lbs, and stay up off the ground where they belong. Spring-loaded S-hooks keep them secure, and a storage rod holds your coiled electrical cord (sold separately) neatly out of the way. The result is a tidy, organized towing setup every time.

Effortless Storage: Arms Swing and Lock in Place

When the trip’s over, stowing the bar should be just as easy as towing with it. The XHD’s arms swing to either side and lock automatically when lowered—no need to lift them all the way up. Whether you fold both one way or split them to each side, they stay put so the back of your RV stays clean and uncluttered.

What You Need to Flat Tow

Flat towing can be a much more convenient way to take your car RVing with you than using a trailer or a tow dolly. It'll save you storage space both at home and at the campsite, and it takes less time and hassle to hook up.

To flat tow your vehicle, there are 5 basic components you're going to need: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a flat tow braking system.

For the RV Between the RV and Towed Car For the Towed Car
Hitch Tow bar Base plate
Wiring plug Safety cables Braking system
Wiring adapter cord Wiring kit/diodes

The custom-fit base plate installs on the frame of your toad so you can connect the car to your RV with a tow bar. Hook up safety cables between the vehicles to ensure that the toad does not separate from the motorhome if the tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring syncs your vehicle's signal lights with your motorhome's tail lights, as required by law in most states. Finally, the flat tow braking system - also required in most states - activates the brakes in the toad when you hit the brakes in the RV, making for smoother, safer braking, and preventing wear on your motorhome.

First time buying a tow bar. Great experience with Jesse at errailer. etrailer videos are excellent.

by:

Very good tow bar. Had a Blue OX before this one and I like this one better.

by:

The pins used to hold the arms bent and needed to be repaced not a cheap buy. Hard to place the arms in the right position to carry behind the RV when noy towing.

by:

We use this tow bar on 6 vehicles that gets used multiple time each month I pull a 3/4 ton Ford , Ez to hook up and well built, we are very happy with this tow bar, I would buy again without thinking twice about it.

everthing works good but cables were to short pulled loose

Jon G. profile picture

Jon G.

3/22/2025

@Terry Sorry to hear that - is the tow bar okay? The cables should be long enough to handle the turning distance of the tow bar. The only reason the cables should be too short is if you were using an adapter/extender as well. Please let me know so we can look into it!

This hitch was very very hard to figure out without any instructions whatsoever you have to watch a lot of [online] movies and take ever you have one out of 10 [online] movies is worth getting after one year I have figured out how to use the hitch properly to make it a non-binding hitch other than that the first year it was a pain in the rear hook and unhook so take a while to get used to it and a trailer didn't help me a bit with how to get used to it

Works great and well built. Definitely a good choice for the price

Great- very well built and easy to use and priced better than the competitors

by:

Tow bar is operating flawless. I love the ease to store, no more need for drop down hitch, and disconnecting from Toad is very easy. Have not had a bind. Can not beat the quality for the price.

by:

The tow bar looks good. However, it was missing the large bolts to hold the blue ox adapters onto the tow bar. The hardware kit was not complete. Also, the instructions on attaching the blue ox adapters were NOT CLEAR at all. I think the bar will be very good once I get the missing parts shipped to me.

Finally had a chance to use the new tow bar, we traveled 1,800 miles, this was to replace a older Avail Blue Ox). i like the design that it holds the safety cable up off the ground and no coils to mess with, for a lower cost than the rest i seen with at least a 10K rating, this tow bar is easy to work with and due to design and does NOT flop around when connecting it.. there are pros and cons with everything, over all this design is very nice. the bottom bar is lower than the top by design, once i installed this and got it perfect level one arm goes down a inch the other goes up a inch, the big con for me is here is no cover for the shafts as the Avail has, i sure i can find and buy some some where to help protect them, other than that this tow bar is a winner and can pull 10.5K, also the XHD is the same as the name brand just for less cost.. would recommend this to any one who needs and wants a HD tow bar..

by:

Recently purchased the e67ZR tow bars for Blue Ox base plate. The tow bars are are made by Demco but labeled etrailer which didn't bother me at all as I have purchased etrailer branded items before and have always been happy with them . The bars came two weeks early but had a safety cable that was damaged in transit that etrailer replaced immediately. The customer service by Dawn was exceptional and the product exactly what I wanted at a savings of over $xx.xx from the identical Demco labeled bars. The product is great, the service exceptional but watch the prices as they change daily which is the only reason I did not rate it 5 stars.

by:

1st tow bar I had to send back, due to chip powder coating. 2nd two bar came a week later Great job etrailer. It was easy to do a return and get a replacement. etrailers whole team was great getting me what I wanted. I replaced a 10-year-old tow bar and wanted to replace it with their new XHD you can tell its LBS is higher than my old tow bar.

The product functions as advertised. I used my towing equipment over a year to pull a 2009 Saturn Aura. I love that the tow arms don't fall to the ground once you disconnect them from the car.

Yes, that is an excellent feature! One of the things you don't realize would be so nice until you have it :)

by:

We've found the tow bar to be excellent. It works well towing our F150 and has adjustments everywhere we need them. Very solid and functional.

Perhaps more importantly, the service and support we get from etrailer means they are our first pick for anything they sell. Whether we have a question about installation or use, or a need for warranty support, they are fast, accurate, and helpful. In this era of having to reason with automated obstacles when you contact most places, they are a breath of very fresh air.

Ashley E. deserves a specific callout for being so helpful and timely.

by:

Only used it once seems pretty easy to use, on and off, the real test going on a 7 hour one way adventure this weekend ,

by:

Fast and free shipping.

by:

I have only made 2 tows so far with my new XHD tow bar and am very pleased with it's quality, features and operation. The only criticism I have is that the telescoping arms do not latch in the retracted position, making stowing them without a cover impractical. My solution is to use a lightweight cargo strap to secure them when I don't want or it is inconvenient to use my tow bar cover. So, only 4.99 stars for this one. :-)

by:

Easy setup. Starting the first road trip this weekend.

@Jeff Nice! Glad it's working well for you! We are pretty proud of this tow bar and I am very happy to hear you are getting good use out of it! ^___^ Out of curiosity, what kind of vehicle are you towing with it?

by:

This is a very heavy duty and reliable hitch. Highly recommended.

by:

Big improvement over the Blue Ox tow bar. The safety chains are integral to the tow bar so you don’t have to deal with them or store them separately. Also the arms stay up and don’t fall to the ground when disconnected. After one year no rust on the bars.

by:

The hitch works great. It’s easy to use. I had a small problem where the C clip came off the storage pin and it was loose. Not a performance issue on the hitch, and it totally could’ve been user error, but I called E trailer and they sent me a new one no questions asked. I was beyond impressed. Thanks E trailer.

by:

This tow bar replaced a 10k Blue Ox that was older and lots of miles towing heavy pickup. I wanted to replace with new tow bar for piece of mind. It was important that I had a non-binding tow bar because I have a 43’ MH and tow a full size crew cab pickup and more than not at rv parks and my driveway is pickup not completely straight and 100% level behind MH. If that’s the case I struggle to release arms. Sometimes both or just one depending on angle. Even if vehicle is slightly angled I have to fight it. Description states quick disconnect even on rough terrain. If that means uneven terrain I disagree. Also, the tabs that hold arms in when not in use are a joke they are not designed for a HD tow bar. Those came loose after just a few uses. Strut boots would have been nice but not a biggie. I like that the safety cables are integrated in to arms and has an electrical cord holder. Tow bar is EZ to hookup to my pickup and tows perfect. I don’t want to be negative (to late) but I would not buy or recommend because of disconnecting issue.

Hey Kevin, I went ahead and sent these notes to our engineering department. Can you send me a video of what is happening when you try to disconnect? These are non-binding but have some limitations. I would like to see if what you are experiencing is considered normal. If you reply to my email with a video, I can help a little more.

Same as above. Tough to disconnect when tow vehicle is not perfectly tandem with MH. The tabs that look like grease fittings will bend when resting arms on them and when trying to to remove arms.

  • Is There An Advantage To Choosing A Tow Bar With Longer Arms
Longer arms will simply place the towed vehicle further back giving you a bit more turning clearance. That being said, the difference is so small you probably wouldn't really see any benefit. When I recommend tow bars, or any other product for that matter, I tend to shop with my own wallet and focus on what's the best for the cost and with tow bars I firmly believe we hit more focus points for a lower cost with our etrailer tow bar than other manufacturers.
